Description:
The Appleton North High School Theatre Department will present the play CYRANO on May 16-18 in Oryln A. Zieman auditorium, 5000 North Ballard Road . Romance rules the day in award-winning playwright Barry Kornhauser's poignant and playful verse adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s CYRANO DE BERGERAC, the classic tale of that enduring hero of imperfection and his classic love triangle with the exquisite Roxane and the handsome and earnest, but verbally challenged, Christian. Written in rhyming couplets, the words are clever and irresistible with a zany modern punch.
North’s production follows highly acclaimed stagings from the Fulton Opera House to The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington D.C. where it won four prestigious Helen Hayes Awards including Best Play. Several special features have been added to make this latest production unique including the school’s first-time ever performance in the round. North theatre director, Ron Parker, states, “We’ve never done a show in an arena style before. We’re putting everyone—both actors and audience on our stage. Those who come and see the show will be sitting on all four sides with the playing space in the middle. It has proven to be a very exciting challenge to prepare and stage, but will provide the audience with an intimate and heightened theatrical experience—you’re literally right on top of the action.” That action includes thrilling swordplay which the students have been rehearsing for weeks. Elaborate 17th century costumes and an original musical score written for the premiere professional production are also featured.
CYRANO tells the story of the romantic poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac, whose wit is as sharp as his sword; the enormity of his talent, intellect, and passion matched only by the enormity of his, well, nose. This more than ample protuberance stands in his way to being a great lover, and for this defect he is not desired by women and in particular by the beautiful Roxane with whom he is desperately in love. When Roxane falls in love with the handsome but stupid Christian de Neuvillette, Cyrano offers him to woo Roxanne with his poetry, seeing this as the only means by which to express his love. Cyrano is concerned with unrequited love, loneliness, missed opportunities and selflessness, and he remains one of the world’s most admired and loved literary characters.
Performances are May 16th and 17th at 7:00 P.M. and May 17th and 18th at 1:00 P.M. Seating is limited to 160. Admission is $8.00 for students and $6.00 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available in the North High School Business Office and at the door. A special senior citizen tea with cast members will be held after the April 17th afternoon performance. For further information contact Ron Parker at 832-4300 , via e-mail at parkerronaldc@aasd.k12.wi.us or on the Appleton North Theatre website www.appletonnorththeatre.com .
